hello everyone...looking for anyone who would remember me - Sharon Genest (nee Rodrigues) at least from 1983-1989. I've been in contact with Bethlehem Shiferaw who's helped me remember Sheila Mugambi, Irene Ndibo & Wambui Njogu...if you remember me please email me - rodrshrn@hotmail.com or join me on facebook "Sharon Genest" i'd really love to hear from you guys...I must say thanks to Bethlehem for helping me with this.

My mother Barbara Mason nee (Owen-Thomas) went to Loreto in Mombasa in the late 50's early 60's. I am sure she would love to hear from anybody from her school years. She is not only a mother of 4 but a grandmother of 5 & counting but a great grandmother of 5 as well. She moved to Australia in '66 & has been here ever since. Anyone wanting to contact mum can do so at christinemason66@yahoo.com.au

I'm Jackie Delhalle - Eldoret 1968 - maybe you can remember me? I've been talking quite a lot lately about Convents and old pals, as
there is an old Msongari girl visiting New Caledonia at the moment. Talked about all this, too, with my brother, Guy, who used to go to Hill
School in Eldoret and then to Duke of York (then called Lennana School) in Nairobi. He is very interested in catching up with one of his friends
James Wheeler, who is Susan Wheeler's (Eldoret 1967) brother - no mail address on your website? Is it possible to get in touch?.

NEW 10/04/08

This is Kati Haynes nee Katalin Takacs. I was at Msongari  in 1997/1998 for Form 1.  My stay at LCM was short but quite formative, with many fond memories. Unfortunately we moved back to Europe in 1978 and I lost touch with my friends. I vaguely recall names, but the spelling might be wrong - Susan Kahumbu (?) (we were on the swim team together, under the coaching of Mrs Wray) and a girl named Sheilagh with light blonde hair. Some other names I recall vaguely are Wakini (?)  - we were on the swim team together and a girl named Martha whose mother was American and her father was Norwegian. I remember faces of others, but no names, unfortunately.
I am now living in the US in Texas. I got my PhD last year and am teaching international management at Texas A&M University. I have a daughter, who is 13.
I'd love to get in touch with people who might remember me. katalin.takacs@gmail.com

I would really like to get in touch with:  Tina Turpie (Her sister was Suzzanne), Farah Malik, Lorraine Shamallah, Gabriella Hall nee Sementi.

I've lived in the States since I left Kenya in '67, currently in Taos, New Mexico.  I was back in Kenya for nearly a year in '73 but didn't visit the school.  I was in Dar and Arusha twice in 2001, visiting my Peace Corp daughter.  Kenya is tatooed into my heart and my old school and friends are such a part of that. Thank you so much for this link to the past!  jr73054@hotmail.com

Pauline Canning writes: I was wondering how many of the old girls I remember actually log onto the Msongari site. I was Pauline Canning, known as “Canning”, and now Paula Senior. I was at Msongari from 1957-1962 as a boarder

I now live in Spain on the Costa del Sol – about 1.5 kms from the coast, right out in the countryside. The track to my house is reminiscent of the worst tracks in Kenya, so I feel very much at home here. I have a home in the Republic of Ireland, where all my family live (two boys, two daughters-in-law and two grand-daughters) and I visit periodically, but I live mainly in Spain as the eternal grey skies and rain depress me. Having said that, I adore Ireland, I just cannot cope with the weather

I have been racking my remaining brain cell and have come up with the following names:

Anne Griffiths
Celia Barry
Diana Burgess
Andrea Campbell
Nora Zanetti
Helen McFee
Peverel Corbett
Elaine Harris
Patricia Freeman, also known as “Snotty Freeman” because she has a retroussé nose
Barbara Gooch
Penny North
Jennifer Pike
Susan Wheatcroft
Deborah Hines
Clare d’Ademar
Beth Read
Carol Mason

Does anyone out there know what has happened to any them, or anyone in the same class?

What a great website.  My daughter has just discovered it, and contacted
me straight away. My maiden was Christine Taylor, and I went out to
Nairobi when I was twelve years old in 1963, and attended Lorteo Convent
Msongari
until about 1967 when we returned to the UK.  Reading you
website has brought back so many memories.  I noticed that two old
friends, who were in the same year and lived in the same road as me in
Nairobi, are listed on the site.  Their maiden names were Anna Walshaw
and Margaret Gent, and I'd love to know how they are doing, or anyone
else from that time.

My name is Elaine Treacy (nee Telles), Just thought I would leave a message for any ex-Loreto girls and teachers. I was in Msongari for all my primary and secondary schooling, (1969 -1981), and I enjoyed all of it thoroughly! I have great memories of my fellow students and all the teachers too! Does anyone know the whereabouts of Mrs Priestly. She was my brilliant Maths teacher for my first four years of secondary school. Maths was my favourite subject and I still love it! I am married and have two daughters, whom I have been Educating at home for seven years now. I live in the Midlands, England. I wander if anyone remembers me, I was pretty shy in school but did enjoy it. I would love to keep in touch with others from my era. You can e-mail me at elaine_treacy@hotmail.com  . SUCCESS! Gail Miller writes: So very pleased to have contacted rafikis from '57 - '61 Msongari:
Clare d'Adehmar, Beth Read; and through LOG, found wonderful travel agency in California (Cynthia Atkinson, Msongari) whose services will take myself and a friend to Kenya and Tanzania next February; my
American wants to see giraffe, lion and elephants; I want to visit Msongari, Arusha, Lake Manyara and Nairobi. Your website is fabulous!

Gail Miller sgail@gilanet.com writes: I attended Msongari from '57 thru '61 ("O") levels and was the oldest of the three Miller girls, my sisters being Virginia (Ginny) and Carolyn; we lived in Arusha.  Carolyn completed "A" levels, and then went down to Rhodesia.  Ginny and I both played on the First Eleven, andwere very happy  indeed when the swimming pool was built!  In retrospect,  my Loreto Days were some of the happiest in my life so far; I am a retired teacher now.

I would very much like to be in contact with the following from my class:  Beth Read, Susan Meyer, and Clare O'Dare (I think this was her last name).

Looking at the photos is wonderful!

Barbara Pelchen barbara.pelchen@web.de writes: I miss Huma Amin (A-Levels 1979), who I lost contact with over 20 years ago. All I know is she married, was then named 'Manners' and lived in the UK at one time.  I have to say, the web is great and so easy to access and the layout nice and easy for idiots like me.   Well done!
I am taking Mother Hyacinth out for her 95th birthday at the end of the month, so I will send you a photo or two that you could circulate.

I hope that Caroline and Sally get in touch - let me know!

Thanks to your wonderful website I have contacted my best friend whom I had lost contact with over 20 years ago. Many, many thanks to Marcia Legge, who saw my post and who contacted Dilys for me and provided me with her 'phone number and address. I have just been speaking to Dilys on the 'phone so far, far away in Perth, but time seemed to stand still for a moment and I feel 20 years younger! I cannot begin to describe how wonderful it was and how happy I am! Thank you Marcia and thank you the Loreto website.

My name is Evelyn (nee) Ruthman (nickname "Ducky"), Kitale Primary School from 1955 till 1961 and Loreto Convent Mombasa from1964 till 1967.

I was delighted to stumble on your website and going through a few names, have to admit that I shed a tear or two! I have been trying so hard to find my best friend from the Loreto Convent days in Mombasa, but without result. Her name is Dilys (nee) Thompson with whom I lost contact after I left England in the 70's to come to Spain for good. The last I know, she moved to Rhodesia and re-married there. Shortly afterwards she had a son called Matthew - and that's all I know. We were inseparable and gave the poor nuns some hard times, but all in good fun....

My parents owned the Mombasa Corner Butchery (opposite the Swiss Bakery) and we lived in Likoni. I still miss Kenya desperately and although we left in 1968 it seems like only yesterday. I would be thrilled to hear from anyone who remembers me and the wonderful school days, hockey tournaments (coached by Major Gascoine) and the unforgettable Swimming Club and Nyali Beach. I remember a few names from our class - but alas! i cannot remember many surnames. I still can picture everyone vividly though. I also have many anecdotes which I'm sure would be remembered by my "crowd".

I would be thrilled if anyone who remembers me would drop me an e-mail - twilightmemories@yahoo.com

Marie Therese Tregarthen (commonly known as Tessa) writes -

Like so many people, I found the website for Loreto purely by accident and was delighted to spend time (too much time...!) trawling through and reading other people's memories.  I would very much like to be included.  I was at Loreto Eldoret from 1958 through to 1962 when Uganda got Independence and I was packed off to Loreto, St Albans, England.  What a shock to the system!.  I found Vivienne Woodall's email address from your site and will be sure to contact her.  She was older than me and my solo trip from Kampala to Eldoret by train at the age of eight was pretty scarey.  Vivienne was the one who took care of me. Once settled at Eldoret,  I quickly began to look up to her after she sorted out what might today be called bullying!   Just a temporary blip - I have fond memories of Eldoret and would love to make contact with anyone who remembers me. For many years now, I have wanted to catch up with Naki Kudla, whose family farmed in Kenya.  They moved to South Africa around 1963/4 and we kind of lost touch.  Anyone out there who can help me get in touch with her again - I would be really grateful.

My friend at school was Ann Shaw, who sadly died from leukeamia when she was fourteen, after she too had returned to the UK with her parents.

Some of the names from my year that I can remember without resorting to a search for photos, are Prudence Grant, Silvana Bertoldi, Jennifer Savage, the Mintoffcyz sisters (whoops - Spelling?).  I believe Stephanie Keating was head girl.

Wishing all those special people from my past a very happy and fulfilled 2006

I was at Eldoret Convent in 1966, and then at Msongari from 1970 - 1973 (did my O's in 73). Was in Kenya for most of the intervening years, and saw Renie Cork (nee Dyer Melville), Roo Wood (nee Knocker), and Anne Nicklin (nee Cattermole) now and then.  Haven't been too good at keeping in touch with anyone else really except Jenny Foster (nee Ermes) who left Msongari in 1972 when her family moved to South Africa.  She's still down in S.A. and in contact with Franci (Luxton) and Heather (Hill) so I get 2nd hand news of them occasionally.

Would love to find both Sheelagh (Leith) and Franzi (Schaefer Kehnert), but it would be great to hear from anyone who remembers me, and am happy for you to print the e-mail address.

Two lovely children from my first marriage (to John Unsworth) - a son, Neil, now 23, and a daughter, Michelle, now 21.

Remarried in 2004 and moved to Dar es Salaam last year.  Very hot but very happy!

I met Catherine Charman recently at a concert in Canterbury, United Kingdom.

She says that she was in Msongari Primary School from about 1976 or so, her brother Paul Charman was in Saint Marys School and her father Ray Charman was an actor at Phoenix. Apparently she left Kenya when she was ten years old to come to England for an operation on her eye, which left her blind in one eye and she never returned to Kenya. She would like to know where her classmates are and what they are doing. (If you wish to make contact with Catherine I have her address in Canterbury.  Please email me at kenyaloretos@gmail.com)

We only spoke during the interval - she approached me when she heard me speaking Kiswahili and I did not manage to get more information from her. If anyone remembers her she would appreciate hearing from them. She currently stays in a home for disabled people, and is quite lonely as her mother passed away a few years ago and her father now remarried, lives away.

Deirdre Geraghty writes - I was in Loreto Valley Road from 1967 up to Standard 6 when I left in 1974.  My two younger sisters, Fionnuala and Grainne were also with me there.  We returned to Ireland then and after many years of travelling I have settled back here in Dublin.

One of my best friends then was Yasmin Fazil - I often wonder where she is now.  In the last few years, perhaps because I now have a little girl of my own who is now seven, I think more of my childhood.  Other girls that were friends and in my class up through the school were Jeneane Kurzley Prat, Greta Quaghabere, Blossom Rodriguez, Kim Velzian, Paula Faranetti. (probably spelt a few surnames wrong here!!)

Sadly, I haven't been back to Kenya since we left in 1974. I believe a lot has changed since then.  My sister went back about 10 years ago and said she had this overwhelming feeling of going home.  When my daughter Isabelle is older I would like to take her to see where I grew up and show here the sights that gave me an amazing childhood.

I would love to hear from anyone who was in my class back then. deirdre@ggiproperties.com

NEW 06/07/05

I'm looking for a mailing address for Patsy and Geoff Weeks.  Patsy grew up with me in Nairobi in the 1960's and their family have stayed in contact with my parents.  I believe Geoff works or worked for Mowlem and Patsy was a teacher at your Mombasa Convent.

My parents received a card from them last Christmas but no address was supplied, or it was lost from the envelope.

I hope you can help,

Kevin. kevins@wn.com.au

I went to Loreto Msongari from 1965 (Standard 1) until 1976 (Form 6 and A level).
I did my O Levels in 1974. I was a border from 1971 to 1976. I was known as Mary Karanja.
After leaving Msongari, I read law at the University of Kent at Canterbury, and at Gray's Inn
in London and became a Barrister in 1981. I also studied for a Diploma in French Law at the
University of Paris. I returned to Kenya and worked for 5 years as a litigation lawyer with
Hamilton, Harrison and Mathews, while lecturing part time at the Kenya School of Law.
After a brief stint doing public interest and human rights (especially women's rights) work at
the Public Law Institute in Nairobi, I came to the States to do a Masters degree at Harvard
Law School. After graduation, I joined the World Bank in Washington DC in 1988 as an in
house lawyer. I have been here since. I have held various positions in the World Bank from
Country Lawyers - where I did the legal work for the Bank's engagement in the country, to
Special Assistant to the President of the World Bank.  I am currently working as a Lead
Counsel in Justice Reform in the Legal Vice Presidency.  My main passion is making justice
accessible to poor people.
I am married to Bill Kane and we have 3 great kids.
I lost touch with most of the girls who were in my class, especially in the earlier years.
From Standard 1 to Standard 7, I had the dubious distinction of being the only child of
African origin in the class. Msongari was a very interesting experience for me.
I am very curious as to where all my class mates ended up. I remember many of the names
on the Wapi page of your website and I would love to hear from anyone for whom my name
rings a bell. In particular, I would love to make contact again with the following LOGs:
Christine Archer who was at the University of Kent at the same time as me and we became
good friends, but then unfortunately lost touch. Avril Nazareth and I were in the same class
from (I think) Standard 1 until we did our A Levels in 1976. Avril became the Head Girl
that year and I became Deputy Head Girl. (I was also Head of Borgia House).
Others I remember include Sonia Beecher, who I think I saw a couple of times in Nairobi
at the Tamarind Restaurant, Diana Holden, Helen Burns (whose mom taught me Chemistry),
Renie Dyer Melville, the Cattermole sisters, Roma Gaster ( her awesome swimming),
Philippa Dunn, Diana Holden, Fozia Mamujee (what are you doing in Russia?!), Deborah
Menezes, Patricia Mengozzi, Alice Ndisi, Bernise O'Reilly, Naledi Katherine Magio
Okondo, Trish Owen, Anna Maria Petrozzi, Kathy Slade, Sue Stonewigg, Sue Emmett
and the Sugden sisters.
I have a First Holy Communion picture of the Standard 3 of 1966 and a class picture of the
Standard 7 class of 1970: I would love to be able to put names to all the faces.
I visit Kenya regularly, and try to see the nuns when I go. I saw Sr. Colombiere,
Sister Pauline (when she was still in Nairobi), and Sr Katrina.
On a somber note, a few years ago, I saw Michael who was the driver of the School Bus
for many years: it appeared that a lot of those people who worked there in the sixties and
seventies were retiring, but did not have financial provisions for a comfortable retirement
and their benefits at Msongari did not include pension plans: I felt awful and am still wish
I could come up with something to help all those workers who were so good to us and are
suffering today.

I have just come across the website for old Loreto Girls - I did all my education at  Loreto Convent Valley Road and then Msongari - I am well and truly a Loreto girl! I noticed that a Jenniffer Sweet (Griffiths) has put my name down as one of the people she would like to contact.  If memory serves me right, Jenny went out with my brother (Stuart) for a short while and then when I was in London I  briefly came across her. Since then there has been no contact. There was no email address for Jenny so please if you have one can you tell her I have made contact. My maiden name was Brooks - if there is anyone else out there who remembers it would be great to catch up.

Trish has been in touch with the news that she has located her rafiki via this website!

My name is Trish Kennedy, formerly Patti Turner. I attended Msongari from '79 - '81. Although my time was short I have very fond memories of my time there.
I would love to hear from Maureen Wangati, and anyone else that remembers me. I am now living in Vancouver, Canada.  jan_turner@hotmail.com

Dani Kaye (nee Leuenberger, left Msongari in 1968).   davekaye@ntlworld.com has been in touch trying to locate a Missing Rafiki.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Catherine Eckersley?  She left Msongari in 1969 or so, having completed her A levels in a whole string of subjects including music, at which she excelled. For a while I was privileged to be one of her best mates, but we 'lost' each other when I left Msongari in 1968 to work when family fortunes took a dive.  I miss you immensely, Catherine, and still remember with nostalgia our laughter, the music (BACH!), and Fappy.  Please get in touch, I'll be so thrilled to hear from you.  Any information about Catherine's whereabouts will be very gratefully received. Indeed, contact from any old friends is immensely welcome. I now live near Cambridge, where I teach A level and undergraduate Psychology.

My name was Liliana Pavlidis (now Bryant).  I went to Loreto Convent Msongari  and I was a boarder  1963 to 1970.  I lived in Kiambu with my family.   In December 1985  I flew to Baltimore and  married on March 3rd 1986.  Lived in the states for 12 years.    We came back to Nairobi, Kenya in 1997 until today.
I am looking for Wendy Gordon, Michele Grouse, and the rest of group friends whom we stuck together. Love to hear from you.
My contact is: lilyharris@iconnect.co.ke  Cell: 0733 716771.

Lilian - best of luck with getting in touch!  Let me know if you have any success.

I have received the following email from Anita Hinton.  As she says it is a long shot but any information is welcome.  Is she a LOG?  Can anyone help?

This is a long shot, but will try. I am looking for Janine Bamford's E-mail address. She was a friend of my mother in the 70's. Later, she and I became friends through the mail. This is Liz Whyte  lizwhyte@bushinternet.com  here Loreto Convent Msongari,(1964-1968) good day to you, well done for making a website, well done to a pal of mine who found it lurking in mysterious cyberspace.

I recognised several names in your Missing Rafikis file, page 6 of 7 Marjorie Borssow would like news of the same people as would I.  I have often thought I would bump into Rosie Goodman in the street by sheer fluke, must have been wishful thinking, we all must have changed in appearance in 30 years, she had a sister called Jenny, came from a farm and they had a bull called Andrex!

I'd love to know how Jane Pertwee is, Sophie Valaris, Rose Patris, Birgit Lund, Liz Watson, Rowena Sempa, her sister Sylvia Sempa, and can add to the list - Lyn McDonald, Girda Iversen - she was my room mate and took me to her home my first ever visit to a farm I wasn't successful at milking a cow and she wasnt admitting to being much better!! It was fun.

I also remember Rajka Marinovic(Gorsenic) she posted an e-mail address on this web, as did Denise Parish to whom I have just written all thanks to you.

Girda was friend with Flora Macleod, more names come flooding in.

Shoshanna Frim, Fuzzy Mustafa, Franca Campana.

Whatever happened to 'em all.? (13/01/05)

Loads of memories and names - thanks Liz.  I hope that you have success in contacting some Rafikis.  Let me know how you get on.

I would like to track down a missing rafiki who went to junior school with me in Iringa, Tanganyika but then did not go on to St Michael and St George's like I did.  Her name was Claretta Fidelli and was obviously Italian.  I think her father was a mechanic in Iringa and we were good friends until we went off to different secondary schools.  I wonder now if she went to St Joseph's in Dar or maybe returned to Italy.  My name is Elizabeth Griffiths and I have met up with many ex Iringans and went to a fantastic reunion in South Africa last September.  Great to see others are experiencing the same enjoyment from re-visiting those wonderful African days.

Habari gani? I am Denise McNeil (nee Parish) and attended Msongari from 65 -69.  I enjoyed retreats with Mother Theresa and would love to be in touch with anyone from those days?  I revisited Msongari in '87 and was delighted to see Sister Caitirona Kelley, (Mother Theresa Margaret) and catch up on some news.  Mother Germaine was the Superior and I often wonder how she is and where?
Any info would be great.  I am living in California USA dpmac17@cox.net (14/09/04)

I'm looking for any information re. the above (my mother), who taught (probably languages) at one of the Loreto schools in/around Nairobi in the 1950's and 1960's - I don't know which one.  Mum was married to Tony and I'm also trying to find out where he taught (it may have been Delamere).

Dave Lichtenstein says "I was pleased to see our next door neighbour in Kenya, Joan Erith (nee Greathead) listed in "Wapi" (what a delightful heading for a section). The other names that I was interested in:
One Veronica Hutson (née "sijui"). She is married to John ex POWS and I think that she either attended Valley Road and/or Msongari. They live in the "mountains" outside Sydney.
Another girl who would be about my age (mzee, 57 years) and was the Eldoret hairdresser's daughter. She used to work in Duncan's Tea Rooms in Eldoret. She certainly was far more sophisticated than I was as a 16 year old. Her name escapes me but I can still picture her sitting at the "check out" desk reading Peyton Place. I have often wondered what happened to her."(28-5-00).
